Chapter 9
Chelsea’s Point of View
I gaped at Kai, unable to believe the words he was saying.
Sleep with him? I never considered the option of giving him sexual satisfaction and how it might change the tide of our fate.
I never thought about Noah like that. And I’m sure I will never think about Kai like that as well.
“It’s just an accident,” I repeated firmly. “It’s never going to happen again.”
My phone vibrated slightly and I glanced down at it.
Cordelia… she sent me a text.
She must be so worried about me because she had been calling me for a while but I just sent her a text that I was on my way back home.
“The landlord is here.” My eyes widened as I read the message, and before I could reply another text came in. “He’s throwing everything out.”
“No…” I felt the words escape my lips right before I could stop it. “M–Mr. Hezron, can we go any faster?”
I heard him scoff his eyes not once leaving the road.
“This isn’t a taxi, you know.” He sassed with irritation laced in his tone.
“Please, I beg you. This is an emergency.” I pleaded, fear creeping into my voice, betraying my intention to face everything he threw at me with a fierce mind and spirit. Without saying a word, he stepped on the throttle, the car going even faster than before.
“Please, wake a minute.” I heard Cordelia’s voice as I approached my apartment. I almost stumbled twice as it was, I was terrified because I could hear the landlord from the entrance of the building.
He was yelling at the top of his voice.
“I do not run a charity! I suffered so hard to get this building up. I had to work my ass off and slave away at the hands of my bosses.” The landlord, Mr. Patrick yelled, “Do you know just how much you owe me?”
“Yes, I do!” I yelled rushing towards the scene, my eyes trying to make sense of the situation, our bags and clothes had been flung out of the house. Some men standing behind him, holding some of our owned property bringing them out of the
house.
My heart raced.
Shit! This isn’t happening.
“I know we owe you a lot of money, but you can’t just do this in the middle of the night,” I said as I rushed towards my sister who seemed terrified.
“Chelsea…” Cordelia whimpered as she grabbed my arm. “…What do we do?”
“I know too well, Mr. Patrick.” I continued, and he clapped his hands. “So, please let’s talk about this calmly.”
“Thank goddess, you finally showed your face.” he walked towards me and instinctively I took a step back. Cordelia hiding behind me.

“Weren’t you avoiding me? So now that I have come to take action you want to show your face.” He poked my forehead, his seething anger was understandable.
“I am sorry,” I pleaded once more. “I am doing everything I can to source the money. And it’s different now because I finally got a job. I can pay up the entirety of the money if you can only wait till the end of the month.”
“Do you know how many times I have heard this?” He questioned mockingly. “You keep promising me, and then when it’s time to pay you run away and leave your sister behind. Just because she is a teenager doesn’t mean I won’t take legal action or throw you out of the house.”
Cordelia clutched my arms even tighter, her hands cold against my skin, and her entire body trembling. And it made me wonder just how long she had been out here trying to handle the situation all by herself.
“I’m begging you.” I felt my tears betraying me as they spilled onto my cheeks. “Just give me one more chance and wait till the end of the month. I promise I will pay up then.”
“No,” Patrick yelled as he turned back to the men who were tossing our stuff outside. “Throw everything outside. And Chase them out of the building. I am sick and tired of them already, I don’t want them anywhere here!”
Some of our neighbors had come outside, probably just to see what the commotion was about.
Shame. Embarrassment
I felt everything, but most of all I felt fear.
The fear of being unable to take care of my
sister.
I didn’t have any money, so even if we were thrown out, we had nowhere to go not forgetting my dire need to sleep; so I could go to work early.
“If you kick us out now, we don’t have anywhere to go, Mr. Patrick.” I pleaded earnestly. “You have daughters like us, and I’m sure you won’t let your daughters wander at night with nowhere to go. At least, give us time to move.”
“You are the reason I’m working so hard. I never want my beloved daughters to ever end up like you, just being shameless freeloaders!” He roared there wasn’t even a sign of remorse in his eyes or voice as he shoved me away. “Throw everything out!”
“How much are they owing?” A deep voice called from behind me and I turned back my teary eyes met with the silhouette of the man who drove me here.
His imagery was blurry because of the tears in my eyes.
“Who are you?” Mr. Patrick asked with a sour look on his face.“This doesn’t concern a passerby, please go your way.”
“Since you’re causing a ruckus instead of trying to settle things amicably, and the noise is causing a disturbance. I have every right to know what is keeping me from sleeping.” Kai muttered without any interest, folding his arms against his chest.
I gritted my teeth, a little embarrassed that Kai witnessed me in such a vulnerable state, he would definitely use this against
- me.
My lips quivered as I turned my gaze away from him.
“What do you mean?” Mr. Patrick sputtered looking around at the rest of the tenants that were just silently observing. “I don’t remember you being one of my tenants.”
Kai cleared his throat.
“I came from the neighboring house over there.” He answered pointing over to a random building. “The noise was just so much that I thought I needed to know just how much this is worth for you to cause such a ruckus.”

“They owe me a lot of money, almost two years‘ worth of rent!” Mr. Patrick yelled at the top of his voice, pointing at us. In embarrassment, I shut my eyes, just hoping for the ground to open up and swallow me whole. “I had done my best and now, there is nothing I can do for them anymore. I need them to leave, I will settle the payment later.”
“If they can pay what they owe, will you be willing to let them stay?” Kai muttered and my eyes widened. I hoped it’s not what I think it was…
My pride won’t allow it.
“You shouldn’t get involved in this…” I answered Kai, and he regarded me with a lack of interest before proceeding.
“It’s none of your business.” I reminded him.
“I was speaking to the gentleman.” Kai dictated and then turned back towards Mr. Patrick. “How much are we talking about here?”
“I know you’re concerned but I don’t think you can pay. It’s over a couple thousands of dollars.” He murmured. “I don’t have the perfect estimate, but it is a lot.”
Kai’s eyes narrowed stroking his jawline, his eyes narrowed as though he was in deep thoughts.
“This doesn’t look like a top–class apartment, especially for someone like her. So I’ll offer fifty thousand dollars, see if it’s enough?”
Mr. Patrick’s eyes widened almost bulging out of their sockets.
“F–Fifty Thousand Dollars….” he stuttered and my eyes widened. Why? Just why was he willing to pay such an outrageous amount of money?
“Yes. I can make a direct wire to you right now.”
