Chapter 20
I sat on the couch, staring blankly at the photos spread across the coffee table. My heart was pounding in my chest, my mind racing with a mix of anger, hurt, and betrayal. How could Scott do this to me? After everything we’d been through–after all the promises, the laughter, the moments when I felt like I could finally trust again.
The door opened, and Scott stepped inside. His face lit up when he saw me, but his smile quickly faded when he noticed the tension in the room.
“Hannah? What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice cautious
I stood up, holding one of the photos in my trembling hand. “What’s wrong? This is wrong I said, thrusting the picture toward him.
Scott’s brow furrowed as he took the photo, his eyes scanning it. “Hannah, wait, I can explain-
“No,” I snapped, cutting him off. “I don’t want to hear it, Scott. I trusted you. I was ready to start a life with you, and now this?”
“Hannah, please,” he said, stepping closer. “It’s not what it looks like.”
“I don’t care what it looks like,” I said, my voice breaking. “I can’t do this anymore. I want to cancel the wedding.”
Scott’s eyes widened, panic flashing across his face. “Cancel the wedding? No, Hannah, that’s not possible.”
“Yes, it is,” I said firmly, crossing my arms over my chest. 1 can’t marry someone who lies
to me.”
“I didn’t lie to you,” he insisted, his voice desperate. “Please, just let me explain.”
I shook
my head, taking a step back. “I don’t want to hear it, Scott. I can’t trust you.”
As I turned to leave, the sound of my mother’s voice stopped me. “Hannah, wait,” she said, walking into the room.
I spun around, my frustration boiling over. “Mom, don’t tell me you’re defending him.”
“I’m not defending anyone,” she said calmly, her eyes soft and understanding. “But I don’t want you to regret not listening to him. At least hear him out, Hannah.”
I hesitated, my hands clenching into fists at my sides. “Why should I? He’s already broken my trust.
“Because,” my mother said gently, “sometimes things aren’t what they seem. You owe it to yourself to know the truth.”
I let out a frustrated sigh, my anger warring with the tiny voice in the back of my mind that said she was right. I glanced at Scott, who stood silently, his expression pleading.
“Fine,” I said, my voice cold. “Talk.”
Scott let out a shaky breath, running a hand through his hair. “Hannah, those photos…. they’re not what you think. The woman in them is someone I used to know. Her name is
my trust”

Emily.”
“Emily,” I repeated bitterly.
He nodded. “She and I… we had a thing years ago. It wasn’t serious–just a casual arrangement. I never promised her anything, and I thought we both understood that. But she… she fell for me.”
I crossed my arms, my eyes narrowing. “And you didn’t?”
“No,” Scott said firmly. “I didn’t. I told her I wasn’t looking for anything serious, and eventually, we stopped seeing each other. That was years before I even saw you again,
Hannah.”
I looked away, my emotions swirling. “So why is she here now? Why would she call you babe?”
Scott sighed, stepping closer but stopping when he saw me tense. “Because she’s trying to ruin us,” he said. “I think she found out about the wedding somehow, and now she’s trying to stir up trouble. She doesn’t want me, Hannah–she just doesn’t want me to be happy with someone else.”
I I shook my head, struggling to process his words. “And I’m supposed to just believe that?” Scott’s shoulders sagged, his voice breaking. “Yes, Hannah. Because it’s the truth. You’re the only woman I want. You’re the only one I’ve ever wanted. Please… don’t let her lies ruin what we have.”
I glanced at my mother, who gave me a small nod of encouragement. I could feel Scott’s eyes on me, full of hope and desperation, but I couldn’t shake the doubt in my heart. “Tomorrow is supposed to be our wedding day,” I said quietly. “How am I supposed to walk down that aisle when I don’t know if I can trust you?”
Scott stepped closer, his voice soft but determined. “Hannah, it’s up to you. I won’t force. you to do anything you don’t want to do. But please… believe me. I love you, and I’ll be waiting for you at the altar. Whether you show up or not, that’s your choice. But I’ll be
there.”
I stared at him, my chest tightening as tears filled my eyes. He leaned down and kissed me softly, his lips lingering for a moment before he pulled away.
“I’ll wait for you,” he repeated, his voice a whisper.

As he left the room, I sank onto the couch, my head in my hands. I wanted to believe him. 1 wanted to trust him. But the pain of my past, the betrayal I’d felt before, kept clawing its way to the surface.
That night, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling as tears streamed down my face. The memory of Scott’s kiss, his words, played on a loop in my mind.
Could I believe him? Could I trust him enough to walk down that aisle tomorrow?
I didn’t know.
All I knew was that my heart felt like it was being torn in two
