Chapter 16
“Sure,” he said, his voice calm. “Til marry her. After all, she had went through so much trouble to arrange this, didn’t she?”
Wyant’s response shocked everyone.
Carol’s heart leaped. She couldn’t believe Wyatt had agreed so easily. She hardly even noticed the disdain in his tone–or rather, chose to brush it off.
Their marriage announcement went public almost immediately and the internet exploded. “This guy is a total scumbag! He cheated with his own sister? And here I thought he was the loyal type. I feel so bad for Sloan. I hope she’s happy wherever she is.”
“His fiancée goes missing and he announces his wedding? Are they out of their minds?! And seriously, is this some twisted version of Sweet Home Alabama? Marrying your own sister? That’s beyond disgusting!”
“Carol’s not his biological sister, you idiots. So, technically it’s not wrong for them to get married. And Sloan’s dead–he has the right to move on. You guys need to stop obsessing over other people’s lives and get a job.”
Public opinion was divided. But under the pressure of the media storm, the Tanners managed to negotiate a hefty settlement.
The wedding happened quickly. Carol felt like she was living in a dream, marrying Wyatt at last. But the dream quickly turned into a nightmare.
On their wedding night, a group of drunk men suddenly barged into the wedding suite. They laughed as they loosened their belts and pinned Carol to the bed. No matter how much she screamed for help, no one came. It was as if the household staff had vanished into thin air.
Wyatt stood at the side, watching coldly.
“This is what you deserve,” he said, his voice chilling. “You killed Sloan. And now you’re going to pay for it.”
“But I’m your wife! How could you do this to me?”
Wyatt sneered. “The moment you went after Sloan, whatever connection we had was over. Didn’t you always want to be my wife? Then enjoy it. I’ll make sure you understand what heartbreak and loss feels like.”
Carol struggled desperately, but she couldn’t fight off the men’s strength. Regret and fear filled her heart.
Wyatt sat down, pulling out his phone. His finger traced the edge of a photo of Sloan.
“Sloan, I avenged you. Can you forgive me now?”
“I miss you so much. Without you, I can’t sleep. I drown myself in alcohol just to get through the nights. Please, come back to me.”
Far away, Sloan sat by the window with a calm smile. News of Wyatt and Carol’s marriage had reached her, but it barely stirred anything in her.

The Tanners and Wyatt belonged to her past–nothing more
Three years later, Sloan was walking with a little girl. Her pigtails bounced as she skipped along cheerfully.
“Brielle, can you hold Mommy’s hat? I need to grab our luggage”
The girl took the hat Sloan handed her and stayed close as they entered the hotel lobby.
Just as they stepped out of the elevator, they locked eyes with Wyatt, who was standing frozen at the entrance.
Brielle frowned slightly, wondering why the man was blocking their way without saying a word.
Wyatt suddenly rushed forward and grabbed Sloan’s arm, his eyes wide with disbelief. His lips trembled and for a moment, he couldn’t even speak.
Finally, he stammered, “Sloan… Is that really you? You’re alive?”
His voice broke. “Do you know how many nights I’ve dreamed of you jumping into that ocean? I couldn’t sleep. I numbed myself with alcohol, just trying to forget. But you’re here. You’re really here!”
