Chapter 9
“I heard that set of emerald jewelry was broken. You should wear this set from now on,” my mother–in–law said with a warm smile as she handed me a beautiful piece of jewelry. “Compared to those dead objects, it’s an honor for our family that Henry managed to marry you,” she added proudly.
Henry, shameless as ever, leaned in with a mischievous grin. “I heard you have a beautiful set of tourmaline jewelry. Since you can’t pull off those flashy designs, why not give them to Wendy instead?”
“You ungrateful son, forgetting about your mother now after you have a wife!” my mother scolded affectionately
Despite her words, she lovingly took the set of tourmaline jewelry and fastened it around my neck
“Still, my daughter–in–law looks the best! Graceful and elegant! Unlike the Hill Family’s, small nose, small eyes, just not up to standard!”
Well, the Smith family sure was protective of their own, but I couldn’t deny that I liked it. However, when we returned home that night, I found Ethan waiting outside, looking as if he’d been there for a long time.
At that moment, because my feet were sore from walking, Henry had carried me all the way home.
Ethan stood there, staring at me and Henry, his face filled with confusion and a tinge of

“Wendy, I didn’t marry Cynthia. We didn’t have a wedding.”
I looked at him with a mocking smile. “And? That’s between you two. What does it have to do with me?”
Ethan grew a little agitated. “How can it have nothing to do with you? Wendy, I promised I would marry you. The reason I got the certificate with Cynthia was just to help her out. The person I’ve always loved is you. Don’t you remember? We were engaged.”
I shook my head coldly. “No engagement.”
Looking at Ethan’s confused expression, I reminded him sharply, “We weren’t even engaged. Instead, you left and registered with Cynthia!”
He lowered his head in shame, his eyes filled with pleading.
“Wendy, I acted impulsively before. It was my mistake! You sold our home and I can’t find any trace of us together anymore. My heart feels empty. Wendy, I’m sorry!”
I calmly shook my head. “No need to apologize.”
“Wendy, I knew you loved me. You wouldn’t hold a grudge over everything…”
Before he could finish his sentence, I interrupted him. “You don’t need to apologize, because I’ve told you before, I will never forgive you for the rest of my life.”

The light in Ethan’s eyes faded and he sank to the ground, holding his head in agony. “Wendy, I was just momentarily confused and made a mistake. Why can’t you forgive me? Please, give me another chance. I promise I will be wholeheartedly devoted to you from
now on!”
I shook off Ethan’s persistent hand. “Ethan, we are both married now. From now on, we shall have no more interference with each other! There is no turning back in life. Since you chose Cynthia back then, you must follow that path to the end.”
But Ethan was unwilling to accept it. “Why? We were together for eight years. You once said you’d only marry me, so why are you marrying someone else? Wendy, do you think Henry is serious about you? Do you even know what kind of person he is? Henry is well–known in our circle for being a playboy. He’s surrounded by women constantly. How can you be sure that he’ll be loyal to you?”
At this, Henry’s expression instantly darkened with fury.
He kicked Ethan to the ground. “Scumbag, do you think everyone is like you, unable to control themselves? I’m not like you. I won’t be on two boats at once, getting a marriage certificate with another woman while still having a girlfriend.”
With that, he eagerly approached, raising his hand to swear an oath.
“Honey, you have to trust me, there are no women around me! Last night, you personally inspected it. I’m completely clean!”
