“Now I finally understand–you’re really sick. Completely insane.”
My words sent a flush of anger across Kathy’s face. But then, to my surprise, she smirked.
“Yes! I’m mentally ill! And guess what? My ‘illness‘ will save my life!” She sneered. “You schemed for ten years, suffered for ten years just to get back at me, and yet in the end- you still can’t touch me!”
I took a slow bite of the apple in my hand. Sweet. Delicious.
“You really are an idiot.” I sighed, shaking my head. “Did you honestly think I’d let myself live as miserably as before? I’ve been reborn, Kathy. My fate isn’t yours to decide anymore.”
Her expression darkened, but I continued, savoring her growing panic.
“Let me tell you something. Life at Willie’s house wasn’t as awful as you imagined. I ate fresh vegetables and fruits grown by the family, breathed crisp mountain air, and even got to attend school. Willie and his wife trusted me completely. Otherwise, how else do you think I got them to lower their guard long enough for me to poison them?”
I let out a laugh, and Kathy’s face twisted into an ugly shade of rage.
“So you let them beat you on purpose?!” she spat, her voice shaking.
I nodded. “Of course. Did you really think I’d waste ten years without setting the stage for my grand finale?”
Her fists clenched, trembling.
“If I had been rescued unscathed, you would’ve suspected something. You wouldn’t have been desperate enough to swap bodies with me.”
I leaned in slightly, my voice dropping to a whisper. “Silly sister, I wanted you to fall for it. I wanted you to take the blame for the sins you committed.”
Her breathing turned ragged. She knew I had trapped her, and there was no way out.
“Even if you escape the death penalty, you’ll rot away in a mental hospital for the rest of your life. Meanwhile, I’ll be here, enjoying the love and resources our parents always reserved for you.”
That was the final straw.
Kathy let out a wild scream, snatching the fruit knife beside me and lunging forward.
But she was weak. Injured. Pathetic.
I caught her wrist effortlessly, squeezing hard until she couldn’t move. Then, with calculated precision, I dragged my nails over the wound on her head.
“Ahh!”
The gauze darkened with fresh blood as Kathy writhed in agony.
With cold detachment, I grabbed the fruit knife and drove it into my own shoulder. Pain flared, but I barely flinched. Yanking it out, I tossed it onto Kathy’s bed.

Right on cue, my parents and the police burst into the room.
Their gasps filled the space as they took in the scene–me, bleeding and trembling, and Kathy, sitting on her bed with the weapon in front of her.
“Kathy… she’s sick again,” I whimpered, stumbling into my mother’s arms. “I just wanted to peel an apple for her, but she grabbed the knife and tried to kill me!”
“She’s lying!” Kathy shrieked, her face twisted in fury. “She attacked me first and then stabbed herself!”
Tears spilled down my cheeks as I clung to my mother, my voice shaking.
“If you don’t believe me, check the fingerprints,” I said, sniffling. “If I stabbed myself, there wouldn’t be any of Kathy’s fingerprints on the knife.”
Silence.
Then, realization dawned in Kathy’s eyes. She stared at me, horror creeping into her
features.
She finally understood.
I had left the knife in a place where she’d instinctively grab it. I had anticipated her every
move.
The police took the knife for inspection. Moments later, the results confirmed it–Kathy’s fingerprints were all over the handle.
I collapsed into my mother’s arms, sobbing.
“Mom, Dad… my sister has always hated me for stealing your love. Her condition is getting worse–what if next time, she tries to hurt you too?”
“You bitch!” Kathy howled, her eyes bloodshot, her voice feral. “Mom and Dad have always loved me more! Their love belongs to me!”
I trembled, wiping my tears.
“Mom, Dad… maybe it’s best if you cut ties with me. If I’m gone, Kathy won’t be triggered again, right?”
Their faces paled in horror.
“No!” My mother clutched me tightly. “That’s ridiculous!”
I tilted my head, watching Kathy’s panic mount. “If you don’t, what happens if she gets sick again? What if next time, she turns her knife on you?”
