The voice on the other end chuckled as soon as I spoke.
“Fiona? Why are you calling now?”
“I’ve got a situation I need to report.”
I quickly filled him in on how Adeline was forcing me to divorce Logan at the reunion. The moment I finished, I heard a glass shatter on his end.
“Who in the hell is bold enough to force you into a divorce?”
Before I could say another word, Adeline yanked the phone out of my hand.
“Listen up,” she sneered, her voice dripping with smugness. “I don’t care what your relationship with Fiona is. I want her husband, and nothing is going to stop me. You’d better mind your own business, or you’ll be sorry.”
There was a pause on the line, then my boss’s voice cut through, colder than I’d ever heard it.
“Are you the one forcing Fiona to divorce?”
Adeline, still completely unaware of who she was talking to, couldn’t resist her usual arrogance. “That’s right, it’s me. Anything I want in New York, I get. A man is nothing. He’s mine, and no one can stand in my way.”
After her little speech, she threw the phone to the ground and stomped on it several times.
I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. The audacity.
“Now that you’ve made the call, keep your word,” I said, my voice steady but firm.
Logan, still holding Adeline with one arm like a prized possession, shoved the divorce papers at me with the other hand.
“I’ve got everything ready. Just sign it.”
I glanced at the papers on the table, confirming my suspicions. Logan had been cheating for a while. I wasn’t going to play nice anymore.
I signed my name without thinking twice and handed the papers back to him.
Logan stared at me, his face a mixture of surprise and confusion. “Fiona, what does this mean? What are you doing?”
I looked him dead in the eye, my voice as cold as ice. “What do you mean? Isn’t this exactly what you wanted? A divorce. Well, here it is. Signed, sealed, and you’re still blaming me?”
“Sign it already,” I added, my tone sharp. “Before Adeline gets bored and dumps you too.”
Logan’s face turned bright red with fury. “Fine! I’ll sign! Not like I care about you anyway!”
He grabbed the papers and scribbled his signature without a second thought. And just like that, our five-year marriage was over.
I handed the signed papers back to him, feeling a sense of release wash over me. No regret, just freedom.
“I’ve signed the papers. Now, you’re free. Can I go now?” I asked, already heading for the door.
“Hold on!” Adeline stepped in front of me, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “Now that the two of you are done, it’s our turn.”
