Chapter 57 A Deal for Serena
Vivienne followed him. “Edmund…”
However, before she could finish, his deep, crisp voice cut her off.
“Didn’t you say you’d never beg me for anything?”
Vivienne clenched her fists unconsciously.

She wanted to say that if he hadn’t arrested her friend, she would never have approached him voluntarily. But thinking of Serena’s predicament, Vivienne held back.
“Edmund, I want to talk to you about Serena.”
Edmund didn’t stop walking. “Mrs. Harrington, when you ask for a favor, you should act like it.”
Ask for a favor? Vivienne immediately realized he had an ulterior motive.
So, he wanted her to grovel.
A cold laugh bubbled up inside her. Nice try, but I won’t play along. If I don’t come prepared, how can I dare to negotiate terms with him alone?
Vivienne stopped and faced his tall, retreating figure with an expressionless face.
“If you’re willing to release Serena, I can give you the medicine Madam Talia needs.” Edmund’s steps halted. He turned around sharply, his eyes cold as piercing ice.
“You really can produce the medicine for my mother.”
Vivienne was unfazed by Edmund’s attitude. “Mr. Harrington is known to be a devoted son. Surely, you wouldn’t just watch Madam suffer from headaches and do nothing, right?”
ia
“Vivienne, you’re getting better at
king deals.”
Vivienne smiled faintly. “There are rules to talking about feelings, and there are rules to making deals. Didn’t Mr. Harrington decide not to spare Serena just because she’s my friend?”
“Now, am I wrong to follow Mr. Harrington’s example of sacrificing personal relations for greater causes?” Humans were inherently hypocritical. The pain didn’t feel real until it hit them personally.
When he put me in awkward situations for Lillian’s sake, did he ever consider how I felt? Now it’s his turn, and he can’t handle it? Isn’t Lillian the one who always makes Edmund choose between two options? Fine, let’s make Edmund choose. Let’s see whether his mother is more important, or getting back at his first love.
Edmund stared at her for a long time.
Vivienne met his gaze openly, not avoiding his eyes. After a while, Edmund’s eyes showed deep disappointment.
She had given up expecting anything from Edmund. How he thought of her was his problem. She was too tired to explain herself further.

Chapter 57 A Deal for Serena
“Fine.” Edmund finally spoke. “Bring the medicine, and I’ll release Serena.”
Vivienne nodded. “Okay.”
The next day, Vivienne arrived early at a traditional medicine shop.
The shop was small and tucked away in a hard–to–find alley, its sign faded and quite worn.
As she entered, a strong scent of traditional medicine hit her..
An elderly man with white hair, wearing reading glasses, was sniffing at some herbs before jotting something down in a notebook.
Vivienne approached him quietly. “Mr. Donald.”
Donald didn’t look up. “Here for medicine again? Didn’t I tell you last time was the final time I’d give you any?”
Vivienne spoke softly, “I was hoping Mr. Donald could help me…”
Before she could finish, Donald curtly cut her off.
“No help, no help. Go away, go away.”
Donald, who had just turned seventy, was a temperamental old traditional medicine doctor.
His medical skills were exceptional. When Vivienne learned that Madam Talia suffered from chronic headaches and wanted to win her favor, she had gone through much trouble to find him after hearing about his reputation.
However, on the first day, Donald dismissed her without letting her speak, simply because he didn’t like her looks.
Vivienne had met all sorts of strange people, but never a doctor like him. She wondered if he had been in a bad mood that day to have thrown her out so rudely.
So she went back the next day.
And was turned away again.
Vivienne persisted for a week until Donald finally gave her a second glance.
“I only sell medicine to the poor. You look well–off, probably a noble. With your background, you could find any famous doctor; why insist on a cranky old man like me?”
Vivienne responded, “I’ve heard that Mr. Donald’s medical skills are exceptional, able to cure all kinds of stubborn ailments. Your skills are unmatched by ordinary famous doctors.”
