Chapter 3
From one day on, those exquisite and beautiful things no longer appeared.
On my desk, milk, sandwiches, coffee, and sandwiches started to appear.
The drawer was filled with jerky, cookies, and candies.
The original needs that were filled in the stomach, simple and steadfast.
I won a complete victory in that gambling game, which was built with five cents.
Derrick did not put down the dictionary he was holding, and his French scores improved with each
test.
In this test, Derrick surprisingly scored 56 points in French.
Everyone was talking about it, Derrick was possessed.
After evening self–study, Marcus crossed his arms and sat leaning on the nearby desk, smiling and gossiping with me.
Unlike Derrick, who had serious imbalances in his grades, Marcus excelled in all aspects. We were in the same class and had always had a good relationship.
I did not express any opinion.
As Derrick’s childhood friend, Marcus gave me a sincere advice.
“He has always had a short attention span and cannot stick with anything, so don’t hold any hope
for him.”
My hand that was writing paused, not agreeing with this statement.
Nothing that made him feel limited in enthusiasm truly sparked his competitive spirit.
Marcus had a strange expression and asked me how I knew.
I looked at him and said, “When I was in my first year of high school, I participated in the math
competition with him.”
After the preliminary round, we had a meeting with the participants from Brighton High School who advanced to the league competition.
Derrick’s name resounded in the nearby schools, and he was recognized by the students of Brighton High School.

“Hey, isn’t this Derrick? Can someone with such a high level of competition also buy their way in?”
“Hahaha, I’m dying of laughter. You guys at Westwood High School really need these clowns to make up the numbers, the level is worrying.”
“What’s the point of having any communication with such a person! It’s too demeaning!”
Those people sized us up and burst into laughter.
“Can anyone come to the city just by their appearance?”
“Is this for the T show? Hahaha! Do you know what is the sum of one plus one?”
When the careless Derrick heard these words, he threw his school bag and went up to the leader,
giving him a punch.
The communication meeting almost turned into a fight.
Derrick was originally persuaded by the teacher to participate in this competition, with the intention of just getting through the preliminaries.
After this incident, he and I together, made our way to the finals and even won the first prize.
Afterwards, he blocked the path of those few people who had stopped the league, and one by one, he slapped their faces with his award certificates.
“Let me tell you. One plus one equals three!”
Everyone at Brighton High School became quails.
So, he was not stupid, whether things could succeed or not, it all depended on whether he was willing to accept defeat.
“What if…” Marcus approached, meeting my gaze, and slightly bent down, locking eyes with me.
“What would your answer be if he really did it?”
I hesitated for a moment, and Marcus’s smile visibly faded. He leaned in and repeated.
“Sylvia, what was your answer?”
The students in the teaching building gradually dispersed, and as the night fell, the quiet. In a row of windows, a tall figure swiftly flashed by.

The desk at the entrance suddenly made a loud kicking sound.
“What were you doing?”

Derrick, holding his French exam paper, appeared at the door with a cold expression on his face.
Marcus stood up straight, paying no attention as he looked at Derrick.
“I was confessing my feelings.”
He bent his lips, but there was no smile in his eyes. Between the two of them, an invisible hostility
arose.
“Derrick, I also liked Sylvia.”
