Chapter 9
1 sat by the edge of the restaurant, a hidden spot where I could see everyone that came in and went on. My eyes suddenly wandered outside and could see through the transparent glass as a group of teenagers gathered around my car, pointing and admiring it. I smirked, remembering the days when I was just like them, only that I admired it because I wasn’t old enough to get it.
“Come on.” I said impatiently as I pulled out my phone, checking to see if I had missed any messages from Maya. There were none. I sighed and checked my watch. I had been here for almost two hours, and she still hadn’t shown up. I wasn’t sure if I should wait any longer.
“Excuse me.” I uid to the waiter, raising my hand to signal for a drink and just then the door jingled, and 1 saw Maya walk in “Finally,” I muttered in relief adjusting my glasses and trying to act normal. I watched as she looked around the room, clearly searching for me. She brought out her phone and I knew she wanted to call
“Maya” I called out from the comer where I was. She spotted me and started walking over. I noticed she
te wasn’t looking as exceptional as she was the
other night, she looked exhausted and like someone who didn’t want to be here.
“Hey” she said, forcing a smile as she reached the cable
“Maya” I said warmly, standing up to pull out her chair. “It’s so nice to se
to see you and I’m glad you could make it here.”
I nodded and looked around to see if anyone was watching us. I was used to this; it made me uncomfortable. People always wanted to know about my personal life since I was well–known in society.
She sat down looking around nervously: “Sorry I’m late, it’s been a rough morning.”
“It’s alright,” I said, sitting down. “You look like it”
“You could say that the said, trying to adjust her skin. She clearly wasn’t comfortable and I had to do something about that
“1 had a job interview this morning, and it didn’t go well.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” I said, trying not to sound too forward. It was strange for me to be humble in front of a lady and for some reason I didn’t feel upset about it
“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked, making it seem like we had been friends for a long while.
She took a deep breath and looked down at her hands. “Well they chose other candidates who they claimed had more experience and better qualifications than me. It just was really disappointing”
“I’m sorry about that, you know something, could help you about that if you want”
She didn’t reply, instead she looked at me, almost as if she was annoyed because of what I said and then I realized what it was
I’m sorry Mr Derrick, but I said that to you because I didn’t want this conversation to be awkward and just so you know, I’m not that desperate, and to me it seems like you are
I winced and rolled my eyes, I wanted her for myself, but I didn’t mean to sound that way. My offer was nothing more than a humble attempt to give her something good to remember her day for, but it seemed like she didn’t see it that way.
“I understand.” I said politely.
Finally the waiter came over to our table. With a glass of wine which I have already ordered.
o you want something else, Maya “I said, meeting her eyes. “I’m fine.” She said quickly
“So why did you want us to meet Mr Derrick” She said sarcastically.
“Just Derrick is fine.” I said smiling. I looked up from my glass and met her eyes again, she wasn’t smiling and I knew I had to get straight to the
point
I leaned back and took a deep breath “Maya “I began, keeping my gaze steady on her. “I’m not going to play any games. You know why I brought you here”
*I usually don’t go out of my way to get a woman’s attention, it’s usually the other way around.” I said somewhat proudly, but the look in her eyes showed she wasn’t Impressed by it, but I continued anyway.
“With you, it’s different. Since that night we were together.
her, I can’t get you off my mind and when I saw you again, I felt something
a connection”
She scoffed lightly, looking away. “Derrick, I’m not ready for any relationship. And even if I was, look at us. I’m a low life without a job or Amy

reasonable qualifications, and you’re probably the most influential person in this city and who knows where else
Hleaned forward. “It doesn’t matter to me. All of that could change, only if you give us a chance.”
She shook her head and smiled again, obviously mocking my approach. “Derrick, you’re living in a fantasy. Do you think you can just snap your fingers and make everything better for me! I don’t think life works that way”
“Well in fact I can.” I replied.
She rolled her eyes and leaned forward, trying not to shout. “You don’t understand” She said sharply.
“Why me?” She asked softly. “Why out of all the women you could have, why are you so interested in me
“Because you’re different.” 1 said firmly. Tve been feeling things I haven’t felt in a long time. It feels like there is something about you that pulls me in, and bonestly it makes me feel like we’re meant to be together”
She let out a short laugh. “You’re talking like we’re in some kind of fairytale. See, Mr Derrick
“Just. Derrick.“1 corrected her.
“Look, I can’t live in a world you’ve created, maybe you can, but I can’t”
It’s not a fairy tale.” I insisted. “It’s real. Lean feel it in my wolf. There’s a bond between us, I know it.”
She looked at me, her eyes searching through mine. “What if you’re wrong, what if this is just something that would fade away eventually!”
“We have to find out then, I’m willing to take the risk.
She frowned and covered her face with her hands. “I don’t know, I don’t.” She said, as if she was in agony.
“I need to know something.” I said to her, my tone serious. She pulled her hand and looked at me with one eye. “What?” She asked
“Are you pregnant?”
